He Shoots, He Scores! A look at some of the best advertisements from World Cup 2014
If you’re a fan of soccer, or football as the rest of the world calls it, then you are in the midst of World Cup fever. I’m a fan of all things sports related so this quadrennial tournament is as exciting as it gets. Also, as someone who works in advertising, I can’t help but keep a close eye on how brands are promoting themselves during this global tournament.
Those brands who were eager to get a jumpstart on their competition and generate buzz began releasing football themed advertising weeks before the first kick-off. With the number of people who would be watching, they picked the right place to do it. To put things into perspective–more than three billion people watched the 2010 World Cup and 715 million watched the finals. The Super Bowl pales in comparison, which was watched by 112 million people.
You may not have time to watch every commercial or Youtube video, so that’s why I’m here. I’ve searched the internet and watched hours of World Cup coverage to bring you some of my favorite brand executions.
Gatorade
With a little help from Cinderella and three magic words they created something special with “Bibbidi-Bobidi-Boo.”
Nike
“Winner Stays” which is part of their “Risk Everything” series takes us through a pick-up game with some of the world’s biggest stars.
Beats by Dre
Nothing gets me more excited than the fusion of music and sports. Beats does a great job of combining the two with some guest stars along the way.
Hyundai
The car company has released some creative ads with their campagin #BecauseFutbol. In “Boom” we get a glimpse of a very busy hospital delivery room and wonder, what was going on nine months ago?
Samsung
This one is probably my favorite. In “Galaxy 11,” the greatest soccer stars come together to save the planet from aliens. It doesn’t get much better than that!
There you have it. Did I leave any of your favorites off the list?
